John Cameron Mcleod, son of Daniel and Jeanne Miller McLeod, was born at Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland, March 10, 1854 and died January 5, 1934.
On October 16, 1874 he was united in marriage to Mary Whiteford in Scotland.
He came to America in April 1881, bringing his family over shortly after that. He first went to Pennsylvania, but after a few months he moved to Osage City, Kansas. He family joined him there.
Mr. and Mrs. McLeod had ten children, six boys and four girls. One daughter died in infancy, one daughter, Mary Caroline, died in 1884 at the age of five, and one son, Daniel, died March 15, 1933.
Mr. McLeod has been a leading and respected citizen in this community for more than fifty years. He is another one of those pioneers whose courage, integrity and kindliness have long been admired by his fellowmen. For nearly a quarter of a century he was engaged in the mining industry. In 1905 he moved to a farm northeast of Osage City where he engaged successfully in farming until he was elected probate judge of Osage County 1912. He served in this capacity for two terms. In 1916 he moved to Osage City where he took up the insurance business which he carried on successfully until his retirement about two yeard ago. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of this city.
He is survived by his widow, and eight children, James of Osage City; Malcolm of Kansas City, Mo; John of Clarkston, Wa; Mrs. O.J. Gould of Argentine, Ks.; Alexander of Topeka; Mrs. Fred Anstaett of Osage City; Robert of Smith Center, Ka.; and Mrs. S.A. Rice fo Rockford Ill.; one brother, Malcolm of Australia, and one sister , Mrs. Mary McKean of Roslin, Wa. There are also 29 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, January 7, at 2:00 o’clock from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Wade K. Ramsey having charge of the services. Burial was made in the Osage City cemetery.
